“You can rinse now.” How many times is this said daily in dentist offices across America? Well apparently a lot because dental offices across the United States flush approximately 26 MILLION GALLONS of water EVERY DAY!

About this time last year I pioneered a story on green dentistry in Triple Pundit. It profiled entrepreneur Ina Pockrass’s launch of a new business providing dentists with green products and services designed to reduce their environmental footprint and cost of operations.

I am pleased to report that the concept of Green Dentistry has really taken off. Today 45 states and 13 countries have joined the Eco-Dentistry Association.

If you are a dentist take a look at what going green can mean to your bottom line. Natural Logic’s analysis of one actual green dentist office found $50,000 of annual cost savings sourced from $2,237 a year achieved by converting to reusable cloth items, $601 a year by switching to energy efficient lighting, and $37,000 a year by abandoning amalgam filling materials, which contain 50% mercury.

And if you are a patient? Wouldn’t you want to go to a dentist that cares enough to implement best practices that make a difference in your local community measured by reduced water consumption, reduced landfill waste and less toxic dumping of chemicals? Next time you are in “the chair” ask your dentist if saving money and the environment might be another path for increasing the brightness of a smile!
